Dimple Chunnibhai Kapadia (born 8 June 1957) is an Indian film actress. She is known for her glamorous looks and her serious roles in art films. In her early career, she starred in commercial movies, such as Bobby and Saagar, but later took on more intense roles in parallel films such as Rudaali and Lekin.
Kapadia is the eldest daughter of Gujarati entrepreneur Chunnibhai Kapadia and Betty
She was discovered by Raj Kapoor, who introduced her in his 1973 movie Bobby. She was only sixteen at the time. She married actor Rajesh Khanna at the age of 16, and despite the success of Bobby, she left the film industry to raise her children.[3]
After Kapadia's divorce, she returned to the film industry in 1985, in the film Saagar, where she once again appeared opposite her Bobby co-star, Rishi Kapoor. Saagar featured Kapadia in a brief topless scene, which was very controversial at the time.[4] After Saagar, she continued to take on roles that were deemed bold. Her sex scene with Anil Kapoor in Janbaaz is still considered to be very bold.
Kapadia appeared in many movies throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In 1993, she won the National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in Rudaali. She was also praised for her performance as an alcoholic in Dil Chahta Hai (2001). In 2005, she once again starred with Rishi Kapoor in Pyaar Mein Twist, twenty years after their last on-screen pairing, and thirty-two years since their first. In 2006, she starred in her first English-language film Being Cyrus. Of late, Kapadia has opted for mature roles, including a memorable comic performance as a pushy stage mother in Luck By Chance.
She married actor Rajesh Khanna six months before the release of her first film, Bobby, in 1973. She then retired from acting for twelve years to raise her two daughters, Twinkle Khanna and Rinke Khanna.
She divorced Khanna in 1984 and returned to acting. Her daughters also became actresses as did her younger sister, the late Simple Kapadia. Her other sister, Reem Kapadia, committed suicide under mysterious circumstances. Her daughter, Twinkle Khanna, is married to actor Akshay Kumar.
